Jon Ramon Aboitiz, the chairman of Aboitiz Equity Ventures (AEV), passed away on the morning of November 30th, Friday. He was 70 years old.

The patriarch of the prominent Aboitiz clan, his roots in the business world date back to the 1800s when his ancestor Paulino Aboitiz founded Aboitiz & Company (ACO) in Ormoc, Leyte.

From trading in abaca and general merchandise, Aboitiz & Company blossomed over the years into other business ventures such as construction, banking, electricity, and of course the AEV that Jon Ramon headed.

His service in the Aboitiz Group spanned 49 years, which began as soon as he graduated from the University of Santa Clara in California with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce majoring in Management.

Some of the earliest positions he held in the Aboitiz Group was manager and president of the Aboitiz Shipping Corporation, before moving to a higher role as chairman in the group’s power utilities such as the Davao Light & Power Co., Inc, and the Visayan Electric Company.

Jon Ramon served as president of the ACO from 1991 to 2008, and the AEV from 1994 to 2008. Since then, he has held the position as chairman in AEV until his passing. He also headed the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. at that time.

Apart from playing his part in the family business, Jon Ramon also held positions at Union Bank,  Bloomberry Resorts, International Container Terminal Service, 2GO Group, Pilmico Foods, Subic Enerzone Corporation, and many more ventures.

With such a track record, Jon Ramon has truly left a mark in Philippine business, continuing the rich history of the Aboitiz family. As a company-wide email stated the day he passed away, “Jon will be profoundly missed as he was an inspiring leader, loving and lovable, and someone who easily connect with everyone around him.”

Public viewing of Jon Ramon Aboitiz’s remains will be on Sunday (December 2) from 10AM to 3PM at the Heritage Park in Taguig City. His body will be brought to his home province of Cebu the following day.
