The veteran actor of "ML", "Bwakaw", and 300 more movies celebrates his 90th birthday

Eddie Garcia in ML (2018)

There are only a few actors who come close to Eddie Garcia’s film count, both locally and abroad, having appeared in over 300 films since the late 1940s and early 1950s. With so much experience across his 70 years of acting (and counting), he has won both accolades in many a ceremony and the applauses of audiences.

Early days

Born in Sorsogon, Garcia served with the Philippine Scouts before venturing into the entertainment business. When he was 20 he appeared in his first films, Kahit Ang Mundo’y Magunaw and Siete Infantes de Lara (Seven Children of Lara), which would be the first among many, many more films to come.

In his prime, he would feature in numerous horror films directed by the legendary Eddie Romero. Among these collaborations include several films in the Blood Island series, The Woman Hunt and The Twilight People (both 1972), and Beyond Atlantis (1973).

Garcia also had a dab at dramatic films like Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon (1976) alongside fellow veterans Christopher De Leon, Gloria Diaz, Rosemarie Gil, and Jaime Fabregas, Nagalit ang Buwan sa Haba ng Gabi (1983) with Janice de Belen and again with Gloria Diaz, and Lino Brocka’s Gumapang Ka sa Lusak (1990) with Charo Santos and again Christopher de Leon.

Even in his old age, Garcia continues to appear on screen like in the long-running television show Ang Probinsyano where he relished in the villain’s role which he has been apt to portray. His most recent film was 2018’s Hintayan ng Langit with Gina Pareño, and Rainbow Sunset with Gloria Romero, where he took home the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Special Jury Prize.

Apart from hauling awards in the MMFF, Garcia is also the recipient of the most awards at the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) with an outstanding 20 wins from 39 nominations. Off the camera he likes to keep a private life, which audiences very much respect given his contributions to the industry. We hope he keeps the years going as he pushes 90!
