Meet Tetsuya, an 84-year-old resident of Japan’s Akita prefecture and grandfather to Naoya Kudo who helped him become the latest fashion icon on Instagram, already numbering 82,000 followers.
Kudo had some spare time so he decided to dress up Tetsuya in some of his own high-fashion outfits. “He was surprisingly enthusiastic about it,” said Kudo in an interview, “He gave a lot of suggestions about where to shoot and other things.”
He thought it was a ‘transformation’ that his grandfather, who grew up in rural Japan, was wearing clothes that wasn’t his own, though “things like my grandpa’s long johns and muscle pain patches he forgot to remove added a nice personal touch,” said Kudo.
Many of Tetsuya’s photos have gone viral online, shot in places where the two have personal connections such as fields & beaches by their family home and in the school where Tetsuya was a principal. “The rest of the family went wild when they first saw him dressed up,” Kudo also said.
Kudo handles his grandfather’s Instragram account, since Tetsuya doesn’t use social media. He says he still has a lot of photos to share, and plans to put together an album or photo exhibition for his grandfather: “It would be nice if we could get some of his former students to show up as well,” ended Kudo.
